How to Reach Khargone

Regular MPSRTC buses and private operators run from Indore, Khandwa, Barwaha, Dhar, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Vadodara. The main bus stand is in the city center.

Key State Highways: SH-26, SH-31, SH-01 connect Khargone to surrounding areas including Julwania, Kasrawad, Barud, Bistan, and Gogawan.

By Rail

Khargone does not currently have a direct railway station. The nearest major junction is:

  • Khandwa Junction — 87 km east (2 hours by road). Major junction on the Mumbai–Delhi line with trains to all major cities.
  • Omkareshwar Road — 65 km. Smaller station on the Ratlam–Khandwa line.
  • Indore Junction — 150 km. Well-connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and other metros.

Nimar Rail Project

The Nimar Rail project is actively under development. A comprehensive survey using drone technology has been completed for precise route mapping. The proposed Khandwa–Aalirajpur rail line would pass through: Aalirajpur → Nanpur → Kukshi → Singhana → Barwani → Anjad → Julwaniya → Khargone → Bhikangaon → Barud → Panjhariya → Jamli → Badgaon → Tigariya → Badgaon Gurjar Railway Station. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared covering railway stations, bridges, culverts, track laying, and electrification plans.

By Air

The nearest airport is Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, Indore (IDR), located approximately 150 km from Khargone. Indore airport has regular domestic flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and other major cities.

From Indore airport, hire a taxi or take a bus to Khargone (3–3.5 hours).

Local Transport

  • Auto-rickshaws: The primary mode of local transport. Available throughout the city.
  • Shared autos: Run fixed routes between major points in the city.
  • Taxis/cars: Can be hired for trips to Maheshwar, Omkareshwar, and other nearby attractions.

Monsoon Travel Note

During monsoon season (July–September), some rural roads may be waterlogged. The main highways remain passable but travel times may increase by 30–50%. Check road conditions before visiting Oon temples or rural attractions.
